| | According to CNNhealth.com, Americans spend more than $80 billion on back pain every year—and yet we still have no cure. Along with prescription pain killers, the dollars spent on back pain go toward imaging studies, MRI's and surgery, explains CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta. |
Gupta indicates, however, that, in the end, going to the doctor for low back pain does not usually provide relief, unless your symptoms are so severe as to cause chronic pain, numbness or weakness.
Instead, Americans should consider several long-term strategies to reduce or eliminate low back pain. Losing weight, says Gupta, and strengthening the large muscles in the back can make a significant difference in how well you handle the "wear and tear of daily life."
Another recommendation? See your chiropractor. As Gupta describes, chiropractors can provide significant relief for back and neck pain. And the American Chiropractic Association explains how chiropractors provide a broad diagnostic treatment, from spinal adjustments to nutritional and dietary education, which can make a significant difference to your long-term health.
Massage therapy has also been shown to help provide comfort to patients suffering from back pain. There are even medical massage techniques to help relieve sore muscles and the tissues surrounding the muscles.
