| | Oprah is into it; so are Madonna, Gwyneth and Uma. No, it's not a club for high-profile women with unique names. It's alternative medicine. As ABC News describes, alternative medicine remains an option outside of "standard care" practices that physicians employ. But it has had a sweeping effect on the country, and celebrities have played a role in its popularity. |
As an example, supermodel Christy Turlington, a staunch practitioner of Ayurveda and yoga, has written books on practicing yoga and created an Ayurvedic skin-care company. Similarly, Madonna and Goldie Hawn have used Eastern medicine practices such as Ayurveda to achieve balance in the midst of the excesses that impact their lives.
Uma Thurman engages in gem therapy, a practice where believers maintain that certain gems "radiate specific energies" that can affect mood and well-being, as ABC News explains. According to GemstoneTherapy.com, blue sapphire and lavender fire can help you achieve mental clarity and expansion. For emotional healing and uplift, rubies and roselle can make a difference.
Suzanne Somers is a strong proponent of alternative medicine therapies and has written several books on feeling younger and healthier through bioidentical hormones. In a March 2009 interview with U.S. News & World Report, Somers describes how bioidentical hormones, products chemically identical to hormones the body produces, helped her combat "menopausal hot flashes and the ravages of aging."
Celebrity crazes can come and go, but alternative medicine is definitely here to stay. It only took a few hundred years for the U.S. to embrace it, but alternative medicine and its legitimate benefits to our health have been well worth the wait.
