Although Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art form, its systematic approach to creating a balanced, positive flow of energy in any environment is still taught in Feng Shui schools today. Feng Shui, which literally means "wind and water," is a practice which factors in the interior and exterior environment, compass directions, the Five Elements, and the theories of Yin and Yang in order to optimize the flow of Qi, or life force, in a room, building or landscape. This not only harmonizes humanity and architecture with nature, but also balances the energy of a site so that its occupants experience greater happiness, health, and even prosperity.

Feng Shui Career Overview

Feng Shui school graduates often come from professions such as interior design, landscape design, and holistic health. Feng Shui training enables practitioners to create healthy environments for their clients—environments that improve the flow of positive Qi and reduce blockages to natural energy flow. The characteristics of an optimal environment vary depending on the individual client and the setting in question, so Feng Shui practitioners usually consult with clients on-site at their homes or workplaces.

Feng Shui Training and Education

What You'll Study in Feng Shui School

In Feng Shui school, you'll learn about the history of Feng Shui, including the two major schools of thought, Form School and Compass School; major Feng Shui concepts like the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) and Yin/Yang; and how to apply Feng Shui concepts to the analysis of interior and exterior environments. Your advanced Feng Shui classes may also include specialized practitioner training and case studies.

Average Length of Feng Shui Training

Feng Shui training programs vary in length, but it is possible to complete basic practitioner training in as little as four days of intensive in-person study. Intensive programs generally last between four days and two weeks. Online or partially online programs are also available; these may take several months to complete.

Average Feng Shui School Tuition

The average cost of Feng Shui school is usually about $1,000 to $1,500 to achieve practitioner or master-level certification. Individual courses range from about $75 to $450, depending on the length of the class.

Feng Shui Certification

Practitioners of Feng Shui are not formally regulated by the government. However, various types of certification and professional recognition are available from organizations such as the International Feng Shui Guild, the International Feng Shui Association, and through Feng Shui schools that have been approved by these organizations.

Feng Shui Career Outlook

Feng Shui training can add versatility and creativity to your career if you're in a field like holistic health, interior design, architecture or landscape design—and all of these fields are in high demand. Approximately 38 percent of adults consulted alternative medicine professionals in 2007, and that number continues to increase. Interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture jobs are expected to show faster-than-average growth over the 2008 to 2018 period, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Feng Shui Salary

As a graduate of Feng Shui school, your average salary depends on the context in which you practice Feng Shui. If you're a landscape architect, for instance, you can expect an average annual wage of $65,910. Interior designers made an average of $51,990 in 2009.
