The popularity and increasing demand for natural health treatments has helped expand the country's network of holistic health schools. In San Diego County, two nationally recognized schools have created programs dedicated to teaching holistic health practices and emphasizing the importance of treating patients as whole individuals.
At the International Professional School of Bodywork (IPSB), students begin with massage therapy training and can build on these skills through a holistic health practitioner program. Those interested in advancing their skills over a broad range of somatic modalities can go on to earn an Associate of Science in Holistic Health. And the IPSB is considering adding Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts programs to its curriculum.
Another holistic health school in San Diego County, Mueller College of Holistic Studies, offers certificates in holistic health practice and massage therapy. In the holistic health practitioner program, students learn bodywork, health sciences, and business and ethics, and they complete elective course work. This 1,000-hour training program prepares graduates for licensure exams.
Massage therapy students at Mueller can earn a certificate in Western therapies, where courses include Swedish massage, deep tissue and spa techniques, or Asian Therapies, including Tuina, Thai massage and Shiatsu. These programs both require 616 hours of study and practice. And graduates are eligible for local certification and to sit for the national certification exam.
