A Brief History of Homeopathy Schools

Tree Bark Becomes an Industry

It all began in the late 18th century; a time when practices like bloodletting, purging, enemas and the administration of complex, sometimes deadly concoctions were raising questions as to medicine's efficacy.

A German physician named Samuel Hahnemann echoed Paracelsus 16th century declaration that "what makes a man ill also cures him" when he discovered that cinchona bark—a substance used to treat fever induced by malaria—elicited early

symptoms of malaria in himself when he ingested it. This single discovery was the basis upon which he built his career—and the profession that has become the multimillion-dollar industry of today. As a result, there are many homeopathy schools and training programs to provide modern-day homeopaths with the expertise they need to succeed in today's homeopathy industry.

The Birth of Homeopathy Schooling

Since that time, much remains the same in the world of homeopathy. Homeopaths still scour Hahnemann's book, The Organon of the Healing Art—whose last edition was published in 1921—to learn the basics of his process. Of course, dozens of new Materia Medica—in-depth lists of remedies, with descriptions of their characteristics and symptoms—have been published since his 1810 book, Materia Medica Pura. Variations of homeopathy practice have also emerged to include daily drug supplements, as well as combination and complex remedies (see our Homeopathy Career Guide for more information). But classic homeopathy has remained close to its holistic roots.

Homeopathy Schools in the U.S.

Homeopathy came to the United States in 1828, and the first homeopathy school was founded shortly thereafter in 1830. By 1900, there were 22 homeopathy schools and 15,000 practitioners in the U.S. The success of these practitioners is often cited as having a significant influence on the abolishment of ineffective and harmful medical practices of the past, such as bloodletting. In addition, homeopathic hospitals often had lower death rates than conventional hospitals when the nation was ravaged with plagues, such as cholera.

By 1920, however, a huge shift had occurred among homeopathy schools and the last remaining exclusive homeopathy school closed its doors. The popularity of modern Western medicine began to snuff out the homeopathic movement and caused it to enter a somewhat dormant phase.

Homeopathy Schools Today

But after about 80 years, the profession is thriving once again. The practice was reinvigorated in the '70s and found a new niche as a complementary practice to Western medicine in the '90s. As MDs and DOs started integrating aspects of classic homeopathy into their practices, the demand for homeopathy schools increased. Today, around 100 homeopathy schools in the U.S. offer courses to medical students and lay practitioners alike.

Homeopathy Schools March Into Tomorrow

The outlook for homeopathy schools is very promising. The wellness boom of the 21st century is giving the profession a new voice in the lives of everyday people who see homeopathic remedies sold on grocery store shelves and marketed on television commercials. Many homeopathy schools are even offering online homeopathy courses and degree programs. Clearly, Hahnemann's discovery changed the landscape of medicine in the 18th century, and it looks like it's here to stay in the 21st.
