What is life coaching?

According to the International Coach Federation, life coaching is an on-going partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Through the process of life coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance and enhance their quality of life. Beginning with their clients' desires, life coaches use reporting, exploring and a consistent commitment to move the client forward. Life coaching accelerates the clients' progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choices.

In the initial consultation, life coaches concentrate on the client's current situation, then deduce what the client is willing to do to reach the desired goals. This helps provide an overview of what needs to be done and the steps that need to be taken for the client to reach improved quality of life.

How are life coaching jobs practiced?
Life coaching jobs and sessions can be conducted through a number of mediums—here are the most popular:

Sessions in person
Sessions on the telephone
Sessions using email
Group coaching sessions in person
Group coaching through the telephone (teleclass)

During each life coaching session, the coach and the client discuss and explore the clients' journey, including goals, wins, challenges and opportunities. They also develop fieldwork for the coming week. Fieldwork consists of action steps to move the client closer toward his or her goals and dreams. The client brings the agenda, and the life coach provides the coaching skills to create a partnership that helps the client advance.

What life coaching certification and degrees are available?
Most life coaching certification programs are conducted as distance learning, whether over the Internet or through the mail, and may cost up to $8,000. Some life coaching programs are offered as part of a college curriculum and require approximately 100 hours, at a cost as low as $1,500.

Life Coaching Laws and Licensure
There is no life coaching job national licensure requirement at this time. Two life coaching certification programs are available: one as a professional coach and the other as an associate coach. These life coaching certifications are available from the International Coach Federation after graduating from an accredited coach training program.
