girl listening to music

We all turn to music for our own reasons—relaxation, a rush, romance. Listening for our health, however, is an option we may have been overlooking.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a recent study conducted at Pavia University in Italy shows that soft music can help lower a person's heart rate and blood pressure. As you might expect, loud music has the opposite effect.

Doctors have already started to use these findings to help rehabilitate patients suffering from cardiovascular conditions. The University of Maryland Medical Center, for example, plays quiet, soothing music in its cardiovascular unit to help decrease blood pressure and heart rates among patients.

In addition to helping people rehabilitate physically, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) promotes music therapy as a means to help patients manage stress, alleviate pain, express their feelings and improve their communication.

Whether we stop to think about it or not, music plays a singular role in our lives, carrying us through desperate moments as well as the happiest times. And, as science has revealed, it has the potential to help us achieve a greater state of health and wellness—if we just listen.
