What is neuromuscular therapy?| | Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) utilizes specific massage therapy, flexibility stretching, and home care to eliminate the causes of most neuromuscular pain patterns. This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief brings about balance between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. |
NMT enhances the function of joints, muscles and biomechanics (movement) as it releases endorphins, the body's own natural pain killers. It can be part of a comprehensive natural health degree program, complementing all other health care modalities.
Therapist who have training in NMT can locate, treat and normalize myofascial dysfunctions (within the soft-tissue system which are muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) fibrotic adhesions, and trigger points. NMT utilizes specifically applied pressure which interrupts nerve impulses to the spinal cord, reducing the intensity of the sympathetic nervous system and activated injury patterns. Direct pressure on the area of chronic pain pattern mechanically forces out toxic irritants that have accumulated at nerve receptor sites. NMT often dramatically increases flexibility, balance, strength and vital life energy by interrupting the pain pathways, improving circulation of the system of muscles that are in a deeper level and upgrading the health of the body on all levels.
Six factors which might cause or aggravate pain patterns are taken into account: ischemia, trigger points, nerve compression, postural distortions, nutrition, and emotional well-being.
Protocols for treatment of common pain syndromes combined with thorough anatomy knowledge are the basis for success with NMT.
How is neuromuscular therapy practiced?
Neuromuscular therapy consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. The pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow. Once applied to a muscle spasm, the pressure should not vary for ten to thirty seconds. After the muscle is relaxed in this way the lactic acid will be released and the muscle should start receiving enough blood and oxygen. Following a neuromuscular therapy massage, any resulting soreness should fade after 24 to 36 hours. The muscles that were tight should remain noticeably more relaxed for four to fourteen days, depending on stress, activity level, and severity of pain prior to beginning NMT.
What neuromuscular therapy degrees or certificates are available?
Testing for certification is optional and permitted only after the completion of NMT training courses.
