| | Obviously, you don't need a nutrition degree to know that the organic food section in the supermarket you have shopped at for years has expanded from a single shelf to 10 aisles plus a couple of columns in the freezer section. Beyond that supermarket sector, stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have built themselves on a commitment to providing top-quality, healthy, fresh and organic foods for consumers. But are these stores worth the trip? |
According to a report at CNNhealth.com, Whole Foods finished first among prominent health experts asked to contribute to CNN's ranking of America's healthiest grocery stores.
Emphasizing locally-produced products, Whole Foods puts a premium on freshness. From its produce to its prepared foods to its snacks, the taste and quality of Whole Foods' products were judged as the cream of the healthy food crop.
At Trader Joe's, you will find healthy, packaged food products from around the world. Ranked fourth in CNN's study, Trader Joe's can lack the selection of other grocery food chains. But the stores take pride in offering products that exclude artificial colors, flavors and preservatives; trans fats; and MSG—ingredients any healthy diet can do without.
So it doesn't take a nutrition degree to shop healthy, but it is something you can use to teach others how to make better choices for themselves. If you find diet, nutrition and health intriguing, a nutrition degree can help you build a rewarding career out of what interests you most—and in an arena where many Americans crave guidance.
