| | Being a yoga teacher can be both an excellent career, as well as, an excellent supplemental career for the right person... As you might imagine, yoga instructors typically do not rake in six-figure paychecks. But what they do take home is a different kind of reward, one that fulfills their inner spirit more than it might fill their bank account. |
Reuters reports that yoga teacher training takes many to a job that delivers absolute "bliss" and a sense that they are finally doing something they truly love. However, the influx of yoga teachers and the economy's impact on student enrollment means that many instructors must supplement their income with other work to make ends meet.
According to PayScale.com, median yoga teacher salaries range from approximately $25.00 to $60.00 per hour, depending on the instructor's experience level and the type of class taught. Private yoga instruction, for example, can pay between $40.00 and $60.00 an hour, while group courses might pay $15 per student.
Wages for yoga teachers can vary significantly by state, with Maryland and Georgia paying instructors the highest hourly median rates ($42.50 and $40.00 an hour, respectively). New York State pays its yoga teachers a median salary of $35.00 per hour. And yoga instructors in California and Pennsylvania earn a median wage of $30.00 an hour.
Paychecks matter, of course. And if Wall Street wages are your goal, then yoga instruction is not for you. But if building a career in a field you love—one where you provide immeasurable health benefits to your clientele—then yoga teacher training awaits you.
