yoga school

Anyone who has ever practiced yoga can easily imagine that spending a year in yoga school is a profound experience. Yoga is one of the most ancient and holistic paths to total mind and body health.

Like any discipline, the benefits of yoga multiply as you devote more time to your practice. Yoga schools give students the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the practice, theory and history of yoga.

Yoga School: More Than Just Learning

Yoga teacher training schools offer unique benefits to each student, but the following list may help get you started on your own list.

1. Follow your bliss. If practicing yoga brings you joy and the idea of sharing that joy with others seems like a dream career, then that's as good a reason as any to attend yoga school. You're simply taking a beautiful thing to the next level.

2. Deepen your yoga practice. By attending yoga school, you will automatically make yoga a larger part of your life and your identity. You will learn more about it, spend more time doing it and begin sharing it with others.

3. Find work/life balance. Maybe you're struggling right now with a job that drains your energy. There aren't many ways to make a living without struggling to find the right balance between work responsibilities and personal responsibilities. Because yoga is an entire system for living based on balance and moderation, attending yoga school will actually help you learn how to balance your responsibilities more effectively. 4. Go beyond the physical. Most people start out focusing on the physical aspects of yoga—the postures (asanas) and the breathing exercises (pranayama). In yoga school you'll learn that there's much more to yoga, including dietary recommendations, meditation techniques and a wealth of ancient advice for living a healthy and balanced life.

5. Take control of your career. When you graduate from yoga school, you can design a career that works for your lifestyle. You can teach classes at a yoga studio, fitness center, school, community center or combination of all of these. You can also offer one-on-one instruction or specialized workshops.

6. Focus your practice. Some yoga schools teach a particular style of yoga. Other yoga schools offer an overview of yoga styles and a historical background that prepares students to decide what type of yoga most inspires them. Either way, yoga school will help you focus your practice on the style of yoga that best suits your body, personality and interests.

7. Choose your specialty. Although you don't have to specialize as a yoga teacher, many students are interested in bringing the benefits of yoga to a particular population, such as children, pregnant women or those suffering from a particular illness. For example, a student who found relief from the pain of rheumatoid arthritis by practicing yoga might find deep satisfaction in becoming a teacher and helping other arthritis sufferers.

8. Be of service. Yoga school will give you the knowledge and tools to share the joy of yoga with others. As a yoga teacher you will have many opportunities to make a real difference in people's lives—from helping a student find alignment in a pose to teaching charity classes where students donate to a non-profit organization of your choice.

9. Create communities. For many people, yoga is more than just a way to exercise. It's a holistic lifestyle and a way to connect with others who share their fundamental beliefs. As a yoga teacher, you can help your students connect with themselves, engage with one another and find meaning in a larger community.

10. Find Samadhi. Samadhi is a Sanskrit word meaning "total self-collectedness." Samadhi refers to the highest state of mental concentration and is considered the climax of all spiritual and intellectual activity. It is a non-dualistic experience of complete peace and joyful calm that many believe can be achieved through yogic meditation. Yoga school may not bring you directly to this state, but it could be your first stop on the way.
