| | Relaxation is easier said than done. And getting enough sleep—or even falling asleep—at the end of a nonstop day can cause anxiety on its own. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), 20 million Americans suffer from occasional sleeping problems, and the stress or anxiety that you take to bed only exacerbate a bad night's sleep. |
One potential remedy for sleeplessness, yoga, can alleviate your worries and simply help you relax. Health.com reports that some yoga moves have a particularly calming effect, making them ideal to practice right before bed.
So the next time you cannot sleep, try a standing wide leg forward bend with your head supported on a yoga brick. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. You can hold the pose for up to five minutes. (Health.com indicates that people with high blood pressure or glaucoma should adhere to upright poses.)
Another method for getting to sleep? Meditation.
As Health.com describes, abdominal breathing combined with a dimly lit room and perhaps calming visualization can help guide your mind toward sleep. You can also try summarizing your day and planning the next one before you go to bed. Processing your thoughts on paper can help you "let go" of a stressful day.
