The University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic located in Bridgeport, CT is the only college of chiropractic in New England, and is the first university-based chiropractic college in the United States. Founded in 1990, the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic is an integrated unit of the University of Bridgeport. The University is a private, non-sectarian, comprehensive urban university located in southern New England, on Long Island Sound, less than one hour from New York City and three hours from Boston. The chiropractic program is a full-time course of study of four academic years (eight semesters), including a clinical internship, that leads to the Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. The College of Chiropractic is accredited by The Council on Chiropractic Education. The University of Bridgeport, founded in 1927, is a coeducational, comprehensive, urban university with more than 3,000 students. Approximately one half of the students are graduate students. The University's campus is comprised of ninety-one buildings. The Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center houses an art gallery and Merten's theater. The Wheeler Recreation Center offers opportunities for students to enjoy recreational sports. The Center has a 25-meter swimming pool with one and three-meter diving boards and adjacent steam room and sauna facilities. The field house has multi-purpose courts, 1/10 mile running lane, Universal gym and free weights and racquetball/squash courts.
The University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic offers state-of-the-art facilities for the study of basic sciences, clinical sciences and chiropractic technique. The newly renovated multidisciplinary Health Sciences Center houses the UBCC Health Center. This outpatient clinic is equipped with modern mechanical tables, an X-ray laboratory, ultrasound and interferential therapy units. The College of Chiropractic also has multiple satellite clinics in the surrounding communities. Research at the College of Chiropractic is done through the use of audiovisual formats, CD-ROMS, and computerized databases. Available to students are MEDLINE, MANTIS, Alt-Health Watch, Allied and Alternative Medicine, and the Index to Chiropractic Literature. A chiropractic reference librarian located in the Magnus Wahlstrom Library manages the specific academic and research needs of the College of Chiropractic. Our students, 35% female, span a diverse range of ages, cultures, and nationalities as well as a variety of educational backgrounds. Currently, there are 210 students enrolled in the College of Chiropractic. The College has a Student Government Association , as well as student associations for national chiropractic and local state organizations. The student-faculty ratio is 8-1. Laboratory sections are limited to 20 students. Class size is limited to 60 students. What is the cost/length of the Doctor of Chiropractic program?Tuition for the program, as of Spring 2006 is $8,860 per semester; or $17,720 per year. Tuition is subject to change. The program is eight semesters in length. Classes do not meet in the summer. Why does the chiropractic college run on a semester schedule?
Chiropractic college curricula have become increasingly intense over the past ten years. The 18-week semester allows greater retention of the material, which will become very important to the student when it comes time to take National Board Exams. Students may use the free time in the summer to work and save money, vacation with family and friends, study for boards, or participate in research projects.
