Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles

Steeped in history, yet meeting the challenges of contemporary health care education, the multicampus Cleveland Chiropractic College system, with campuses in beautiful Kansas City and in the international mecca of Los Angeles, has been a leader in providing health care education for over 80 years.

A young profession, chiropractic health care is now entering its second century of existence. In the early years, there were hundreds of schools of chiropractic. Now, the Cleveland Chiropractic Colleges are two of only 16 accredited chiropractic colleges in existence in the United States.

The Cleveland Chiropractic Colleges are the only chiropractic institutions that continue under the leadership of a pioneering family member.

The College currently awards three degrees: Doctor of Chiropractic, Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and an Associate of Arts in Biological Sciences. Students pursuing these degrees, as well as students pursuing degrees in other health care professions can take their prerequisite physical and life sciences courses in accelerated, eight-week intervals at the College.

Pioneering Family

Dr. C.S. Cleveland Sr. and Dr. Ruth R. Cleveland, husband and wife, turned their dream into a reality in 1922 when they started Cleveland Chiropractic College with three students. As the next generation of doctors of chiropractic, their son, Carl Jr., and his wife, Mildred Allison also put their hearts and souls into the growth of this profession and the College. Now, the grandson of the founders, Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, is continuing the tradition as president of the multicampus Cleveland Chiropractic College system. A fifth generation chiropractor, Ashley Cleveland, M.A., D.C., is Assistant Dean of Instruction and faculty member at the Kansas City campus.

The Multicampus System

• Employs highly qualified faculty with broad experience and credentials;
• Has a low student/faculty ratio that encourages personalized individual attention;
• Offers students the flexibility to choose between a 10-trimester or a 12-trimester curriculum;
• Operates on a trimester system with new classes starting three times a year; and
• Offers the same curriculum on two separate campuses:
  • The Kansas City campus, in the heart of the Midwest, is known for its reasonable standard of living and beautiful setting, and
  • The Los Angeles campus, strategically located in the Hollywood area, offers easy access from a multitude of transportation possibilities and the convenience provided by the proximity to a major international hub.

Doctor of Chiropractic Program

• Develops traditional clinical competencies through early hands-on introduction to multiple spinal adjusting techniques;
• Provides a balanced approach to the philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic;
• Positions qualified graduates and senior interns in nationwide preceptor, postceptor, and extended preceptor programs, expanding the clinical educational experience to the private practice setting; and
• Offers postgraduate education programs that attract internationally known speakers and doctor participants from across the country.

Bachelor of Science in Human Biology Program

The Bachelor of Science in Human Biology program includes courses in mathematics, general and organic chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy and physiology. At the upper division level, the degree emphasizes human biology related areas, such as embryology, cell physiology, human anatomy and physiology (all organs), genetics, and research related to human biology.

The program provides students with the following:

• An understanding of biological, chemical, and physical sciences
• A basic knowledge in anatomical structure and the physiological processes of human organ systems
• The ability to relate the basic science knowledge to graduate studies in health related professions

Associate of Arts in Biological Sciences Program

Cleveland Chiropractic College offers an Associate of Arts in Biological Sciences. The general objective of the undergraduate division is to provide the student a strong undergraduate education that stresses the structure and function of the human body while providing for the general education requirements of the degree.

Professional Health Science Courses

To help students get a jump-start on a career in healthcare - chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, etc. - the College's Preprofessional Health Science Program offers prerequisite physical and life sciences courses in accelerated, eight-week modules. Science courses include three hours of lecture and one hour of lab for four semester hours. Courses in the program begin six times a year.

History

• Founded as Ratledge College in 1908 in Guthrie, Oklahoma and then moved to Los Angeles, California in 1911
• Came under Cleveland leadership in 1950 and was renamed Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles in 1955
• Moved to 590 North Vermont Avenue in 1976

Campus & Facilities

• The campus is strategically located in the Hollywood area with easy access from the 101 Freeway and just a short walk from two separate light rail stations.
• There are over 150 restaurants and more than 200 retail centers within a five-mile radius of the campus.
• While enjoying the luxury of being located in a major internationally renowned urban center, the campus still maintains a safe and close-knit academic atmosphere.
• The total land area on which the campus resides is 3.05 acres.
• The building consists of four floors and provides 90,000 square feet of floor space. Classrooms, laboratories, clinic facilities, student meeting areas, cafeteria, recreation room, and administrative offices are all conveniently located in one complex.
• The 4,000 square foot library is located in a self-contained building on campus and maintains approximately 20,000 resources including books, journals, monographs and CD-ROM materials. The Media Resource Center houses a wide variety of instructional aides, small study group rooms, and a museum.
• Conveniently located on the first floor of the building, the Clinic houses consultation rooms, conference rooms, examination and treatment rooms, physiotherapy rooms and a radiological laboratory.
