RMTS #3 Our Mission at Crystal Mountain is...
To educate our students to become
To offer this training in
To encourage the greatest
To increase public awareness
Our PhilosophyCrystal Mountain is a relaxed place to learn, grow, and acquire professional skills. Many students have said that their time here has changed their lives. Students who choose our program feel drawn to massage therapy as a path to a more rewarding profession and as a commitment to their own personal development. In the words of one of our graduates, "I feel I have learned more in the past 6 months than in all of my life. The best thing I could have done was to attend Crystal Mountain. The focus of our program is on helping you, the student, become fluent in the skills necessary for being an outstanding massage therapist. We have studied the skills and life practices of successful practitioners and created our curriculum based on the development of these essential abilities. These abilities include fluency in Touch/Movement, Ethics, Compassion, Presence, and Communication. Our teaching philosophies include recognition that learning is a process, not an event, that different students learn in different ways, and that a climate of encouragement makes learning easier. At Crystal Mountain, the recognition that the Body-Mind-Spirit is part of every moment of our lives is embedded in our program. We know that living systems are capable of incredible growth and change. Our intention is to facilitate that growth in the best way possible. Although there is a modern scientific foundation for our work, massage therapy is also an ancient healing art that we thoroughly enjoy sharing with our students and our communities. Each person is valued and given the tools with which to meet the rigorous standards our faculty and staff have developed. A profound educational experience evolves for each of our students. Faculty and StudentsOur faculty is outstanding - with a combined history of over 165 years in the healing arts. All of our teachers practice the work they teach -- creating an environment that is always current and practice oriented. Our program is experiential with the focus being on learning by doing. Students continuously practice the skills they learn - and receive expert feedback on those skills from the faculty. Class size is limited to thirty students. This makes for a dynamic and effective learning experience. This size class allows for both intimacy and distance; attributes that are useful during an intensive personal growth experience. Every member of our faculty and administrative staff is available to our students. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor to work with privately, outside of class. In these one-on-one massage therapy sessions the student demonstrates his/her skills by providing a treatment for the instructor. The instructor is then able to provide expert feedback based on first hand experience with the student's massage skills. Students say that these advisor treatments are an incredible way to explore their strengths and weaknesses. Because we believe so much in the value of feedback from experienced practitioners, our program includes regularly scheduled opportunities for such feedback, in addition to the advisor sessions. Our faculty meets monthly to discuss the students' progress and to keep our approach fresh for each class.
Our Massage Therapy ProgramOur state registered and approved Massage Therapy Licensure Program consists of 675-700 hours of training. Of this total, 525-550 hours are completed in the classroom over a six to eleven month period. The remaining 150 hours are completed in the clinical internship program. These 150 hands-on clinical hours are completed outside of, and in addition to, class time. Because of other responsibilities such as work, family, et cetera, students are allowed up to one year (day program) or 18 months (evening program) to complete their internship requirements. Classroom hours consist of lecture, discussion and hands-on practice of a wide variety of massage therapy techniques. Explorations of techniques by our instructors are used in all hands-on classes, along with information regarding appropriate applications and contraindications. Following these demonstrations, students work with each other and practice the techniques and treatments while our instructors provide one-on-one guidance. Ample class time is provided for treatment exchanges and students are encouraged to integrate the various modalities into a style that becomes uniquely their own. Our Invitation to YouIt's hard to describe just how wonderful the people and the land are, here, in New Mexico.
