History

The roots of Dongguk Royal University (DRU) reach back to 1976, When Dr. Harvart R. Hongo began teaching the fundamentals of acupuncture and Oriental medicine at his Sei Shin Acupuncture Clinic. Encouraged by his patients, who wished to learn more about this wonderful healing art, Dr. Hongo took the initial steps toward his goal of combining research and educational pursuits, along with providing charitable health services to the surrounding community. Dr. Hongo's dream materialized in 1979 with the founding of Royal University of America. In January of 1997, Royal University of America merged with Dongguk (translates as "East Country") University, one of South Korea's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning, especially known for its outstanding College of Oriental Medicine. Collectively, these two institutions on both sides of the Pacific have been educating students for more than 110 years.
