What is Medical Massage?Medical massage is a results-oriented, evidence-based approach to relieve pain and discomfort related to soft tissue and body structure. The training for medical massage at Hands-on Medical Massage School (HoMMS) includes a solid base of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, psychology, and nutrition as well as the various hands-on modalities of Swedish, deep tissue, sports massage, hydrotherapy, lymph, neuromuscular, myofascial, pain management, geometric release, etc. Therapists also learn to properly assess clients and write up appropriate records such as SOAP and progress notes. Medical massage therapists are trained to assess their clients before and after treatments to determine effectiveness of the therapy. Treatment begins with determining the origin or root of the pain the client is experiencing. Before a therapist graduates, they have completed nearly 100 hours in a clinical setting treating a wide variety of clients from the community. The therapists also learn to present basic wellness education to the community. Medical massage therapists are able to bill for workman's comp, certain groups of risk management, and personal injuries related to a car accident with a physicians referral. Associate of Science Degree in Medical Massage Therapy (60 Credits)The 1095-hour certification program builds on the Professional Massage Therapy certification (540 hours). Additional techniques for this Medical Massage certification include Myofascial Release, Lymph, Neuromuscular, Hospital-based, Geometric Release, and Pain Management Therapy. Other classes include Psychology, Nutrition, Communications, Business Math, Kinesiology. The hands-on technique and theory classes, along with case studies help to develop the students' critical thinking skills. Employers like to see a degree on your résumé. Be a cut above with an Associate Degree. Once the student has finished the 1095-hour Medical Massage certificate, they have the option to earn an Associate Degree. Certificate in Professional Massage Therapy (540 hours)
Massage Techniques: The massage techniques include Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports, Strain/Counterstrain, Hydrotherapy, Intro to Pregnancy, and Infant Massage. Innovative Learning Techniques: HoMMS understands that some students may have a fear of anatomy and physiology so we have developed new innovative learning techniques that make it easier to learn and to remember these science courses. Attention is given to self-care, body mechanics, wrist and back care, as well as the more psychological aspects of medical massage therapy. In addition, our students learn ethics, communication skills, boundaries, and intro to business. Clinical Internship: The clinical internship allows the students to combine formal education with related work experience. The supervised clinic teaches students to critically analyze and assess a client's needs and organize a treatment plan and implement treatments on actual clients from the community. In addition to building various skills, it also builds confidence for an easy transition to sites of employment. Community Outreach: As part of their curriculum, students have the opportunity to participate in community outreach at retirement centers, shelters, local athletic events, and other charitable fund-raisers. Career Opportunity: Upon completion of the 540 hour program, the graduate will be eligible to become a licensed massage therapist in most of massage therapy positions from spas and cruises to health care settings such as chiropractor offices.
