International School for Colon Hydrotherapy

My name is Cathy Shea and I have studied natural healing all of my life. When I met my husband, Michael J. Shea, Ph.D., I had just finished my first series of colon hydrotherapy treatments (colonics). As we sat at dinner on our first date, I was amazed to find out that he was both a massage and colon hydrotherapist. I began to travel and study with him in 1990 after we were married. It became clear to me that my career in real estate was coming to an end as I was entering into my practice of helping people heal themselves. I then became licensed in Florida in 1992 and began a full-time practice of colon hydrotherapy. Michael encouraged me to begin teaching and after assisting him at numerous courses around the world, I felt ready. In 1994 I invited 6 of my best friends to take my first colon hydrotherapy course and it was such fun! We laughed and learned together. I was delighted at this new direction in my life. It felt like I had answered a deep calling and my work has become my spiritual practice. I was one of the first instructors recognized by the International Association for Colon Therapy (I-ACT) which has over 1,500 members in 21 countries. I have personally taught people in 12 countries from around the world.

What sets our school apart from others is our focus on experiential learning. I was always challenged by the typical school system of "hear it and repeat it". What I know about the way I learn is that my hands are my tools for learning and once I practice, its part of my mind and body. Most of my learning has occurred as part of my own healing path. I continue to explore ways to enhance my wellness with a focus on affirming life and choosing new ways to help others.

Our academic materials are original texts from the science of hydrotherapy in Europe. We use models to enhance the visual images of how the anatomy functions. We encourage personal exploration and inquiry and your learning style is honored. Our courses are limited to 5 participants and we create a unique mentorship for each person. Our intention is to teach respect and reverence and do what is appropriate and correct to relieve pain and suffering. We teach the importance of empowering the client, asking permission, making space for healing to unfold and working gently and slowly. Many have said that taking our course is like going on a retreat. It is our privilege to offer the highest standards of quality learning that we can. Our courses are directed towards the sacredness of life and the opportunity to serve.

In our Basic Course of 100 hours, you will learn about nutrition, herbal medicine, home remedies, Eastern philosophy of digestion & nutrition and of course, the use of clean, warm water to gently cleanse the colon. You study 50 hours at home with correspondence course materials then attend 50 hours of practice in a clinical setting under supervision.

The Advanced Program of 30 hours is open to any therapist who has been in practice a minimum of 1 year. We explore the following topics: Parasites; Eating Disorders; Autonomic & Enteric Nervous Systems; Ethics & Boundaries; Working with Emotions; Using Implants; Aromatherapy; Massage Techniques including Visceral Manipulation; Lymphatic Drainage; Pathology of the Digestive System and more. Classes with some of these topics are rotated throughout the year so please let us know which one interests you.

The ART of TEACHING program of 30 hours is designed to help candidates learn how to identify a student's learning style. The schedule allows for participants to demonstrate their expertise and have positive feedback from the instructor and observers. Participants will receive coaching regarding leadership qualities and how to create a safe space for healing to occur. We inform candidates of the most recent research regarding stress responses and trauma held in the nervous systems and how it relates to digestive process and our role as colon hydrotherapists.

I-ACT testing is available at all of our courses. Please call to be qualified.
