Massage Therapy Program

The objective of Keiser University's Massage Therapy program is to prepare students for an entry-level position as a Massage Therapist. Students will develop the skills necessary to meet the needs of the health care community.

This program provides instruction in therapeutic massage with knowledge of the structure and function of the human body. Students receive training in hydrotherapy, sports massage, therapeutic massage, body systems, spa theory and technique, among other areas.

In your massage therapy program you will come to understand the body as a whole and dynamic organism of which the systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another. Each of these systems is also explored independently to gain knowledge of the importance of their individual roles.

In addition you will learn the history of massage and Swedish massage techniques that form the basis for therapeutic massage. Once understanding the basics, you will focus specifically on therapeutic massage with concentration in therapist care, body mechanics, client draping and positioning, interpersonal communication, palpatory skills, and joint movement.

Your coursework will include specific instruction in sports massage including how the body responds to various sports-related activities-with an emphasis on injuries, pain, and sports movement. In this area you will learn pre- and post-sports massage techniques and routines as well as being exposed to the role massage therapy plays in sports.

The Massage Therapist program at Keiser University also covers current trends in spa therapy including paraffin baths, hydrocollators, thermaphores, hot packs, and ice packs. There will be an emphasis on the most common ailments the professional massage therapist will encounter with clients. Appropriate massage intervention as well as prevention techniques are covered. Additionally, topics such as range of motion, passive range of motion, manual and resistive tests, and orthopedic testing are covered.
