About Us

LHAA has been successfully educating students in holistic health care since 1999. It is our passion to assist individuals in opening their minds, hearts, and possibilities through education and community.

Our Yoga teacher training program prepares the students to successfully and confidently instruct Yoga classes in a variety of settings. The school also offers a variety of workshops in massage and bodywork, yoga and other holistic studies for an individual's professional and personal development. Massage Therapy and Yoga as a Profession

Massage therapy and Yoga are two of the fastest-growing health care professions and are gaining the respect and acceptance of more "traditional" health care practitioners and providers. Recognized for their therapeutic effects, massage therapy and yoga are being incorporated as an adjunct therapy to many conventional Western modalities and treatments. The fields of massage therapy and yoga are opening new doors of opportunity to members of the profession. Massage therapists with comprehensive training are assisting clients in areas of stress management, injury recovery and preventative health care. Career opportunities for the licensed massage therapist include private practice, health clubs, day and resort spas, beauty salons, sports teams, corporations, stress reduction/relaxation centers and working in association with other health practitioners such as chiropractors, medical doctors, dentists, physical therapists and psychologists. Career opportunities for Yoga instructors include private practice, health clubs, day and resort spas, wellness centers and stress reduction/relaxation centers.

LHAA Environment

School Community

The school is centrally located in Lexington, Kentucky. As an institution we value small classes, consistent policies, respect, and appreciation and acceptance of each individual. We have tried to make our school as comfortable and appropriate for study and practice as possible. On our campus we offer four spacious classrooms, a large and attractive student lounge, ten massage treatment rooms, a yoga center, a nice landscaped lawn, a library and administrative offices. Free, well lit onsite parking is plentiful. The classrooms, administrative offices and treatment rooms are all handicap accessible.

Classes range in size from 8 to 20 students. Typically, if a class exceeds 15 students a teacher's assistant will assist the faculty member. Applied science courses are typically in a lecture format. Students that begin a class together will go through the entire program together. Our small class sizes help ensure that students receive adequate help and supervision and maximize the potential for personal growth.

About the Students

Students attending LHAA have ranged in age from 18 to 63 and have come from very diverse backgrounds. They include accountants, artists, beauticians, nurses, personal trainers, teachers, scientists, parents and a whole host of other occupations, as well as people entering the work force for the first time. We have found that this broad diversity in our student population enriches the experience for our students.

Massage Therapy Program

Lexington Healing Arts Academy provides a 650 Hour Massage Therapy training program consisting of 542 classroom hours and 108 hours in our Student Intern Clinic. The program is divided into two terms; Term I consists of hours 1-328 and Term II is from 329-650 hours. It is required that students complete each class of Term I with a 70 percent or higher grade to enter into Term II. The program provides a thorough and broad-based education in massage therapy. Students can expect to graduate from the program in a reasonable amount of time, 39 to 57 weeks not including vacation days, depending upon the day or evening program.

The objectives of the program are:

  • Development of basic competency in the fundamentals of therapeutic massage, Chair massage, Pregnancy massage, Hydrotherapy, Energy Work and Clinical massage techniques.
  • Establish a solid foundation in the applied sciences: anatomy, physiology, pathology and kinesiology.
  • Gain an understanding of holistic wellness in mind/body/spirit and establish the practice of personal/professional development skills.
  • Development and integration of professional ethics and personal relationship skills such as boundary setting, empathy and effective communication.
  • Gain insight into career goals and develop tools and skills that support a smooth transition into a professional massage career in a broad array of employment settings.
  • Exhibit and practice confidence, competence and professionalism during the clinical internship.

The school employs a variety of instructional methods including lecture, demonstrations, audio/visuals and hands-on practice. None of the courses offered by LHAA are offered by distance learning. At the completion of the 650 hour Massage Training program, the students will receive a certificate of completion from the program. Completion of this program will prepare students to take the NCBTMB exam required for state licensure and begin a career in Massage Therapy.

Scheduling

Day and evening programs begin in January and September. An evening program is also scheduled to begin in April. If classes do not reach a certain enrollment the school has the prerogative to cancel or change a class start date.

Day classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. The day program takes 39 weeks to complete. This does not include holidays and scheduled time off. Evening courses are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The evening program takes 57 weeks to complete. Again, this does not include holidays and scheduled time off.

Course Descriptions

The program at Lexington Healing Arts Academy has targeted national certification guidelines (NCBTMB) to establish both scope and depth of course content. The syllabi in the documentation provided elaborate on these content expectations. We emphasize a foundation of holistic wellness throughout the curriculum to enhance the mind/body/spirit balance in the student. Below is a brief description of courses taught at LHAA.

Massage Fundamentals/The Basics 158 hours
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Swedish massage therapy. Techniques included are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction and compression.

This class then goes on to teach pregnancy massage, hydrotherapy, stretching and complimentary body work systems, which include Chakras/Polarity, Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Eastern thought.

Massage Fundamentals/Clinical Applications of Massage Therapy 104 hours
Students will learn proper deep tissue techniques as well as the critical thinking skills necessary to apply them. Students will learn how to do postural analysis, as well as develop treatment plans for those clients with injuries, trauma, and medical situations. This will be accomplished through application of techniques such as trigger points, myofascial release and neuromuscular massage. A focus of this class is to prepare the students to approach the varied populations as they enter into the student clinic.

Anatomy & Physiology 70 hours
This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of how the human body is put together, how it functions, and how form and function are related. It begins with an introduction to human anatomy and physiology including terminology and basic chemistry used in later chapters. The course concludes with in depth study of the anatomy and function of the skin and musculoskeletal systems including the effects of massage on these systems.

Pathology 16 hours
This course goes hand in hand with A&P 1 and is designed to give the student an understanding of how the human body behaves in response to disease and injury and how it relates to them when massage is appropriate. It begins with an introduction to pathology, medical terminology, universal precautions and proper documentation. It continues with study of specific diseases and injuries of the skin and musculoskeletal systems.

Ethics 20 hours
This course identifies and addresses professional and ethical issues that may be encountered in the clinical internship and in professional practice after graduation. Role plays, lecture, class participation and guest speakers prepare students for clinical practice.

Movement 24 hours
This class is designed to give students the experience of greater freedom of movements in their own body, as well as fluidity while working with a client. These techniques also educate students to recognize and interpret movement and/or restrictions in their clients' body.

Kinesiology 40 hours
This class provides students with knowledge of muscle attachments, actions and nomenclature. The students are then able to apply this knowledge to muscle specific palpations and massage techniques.

Anatomy & Physiology 62 hours
This course is a continuation of A&P 1, providing a basic understanding of the anatomy and function of the nervous, cardiovascular, immune, digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems including the effects of massage on these systems.

Pathology 24 hours
This course works with A&P 2, covering specific diseases and injuries of the nervous, cardiovascular, immune, digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems, and how and when massage is appropriate for each condition.

Career Development 24 hours
This class provides an understanding of basic business ethics and principles, including marketing, self-evaluation, interviewing skills, resume building and business plan development. Students will also be prepared to apply and take the National Certification Exam.

Clinical Internship 108 hours
