Program of Study

The Midwest College of Oriental Medicine has campuses in Racine, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. Both campuses offer a 27 month master's level Acupuncture Certificate Program and a 36 month Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition, combined with the Master of Science Degree in Oriental Medicine. The Midwest College is the only school of Oriental Medicine in America to offer these combined degrees. Both the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine programs qualify graduates to sit for the National Boards and thus become licensed acupuncturists.

Education at the Midwest College focuses on the classical teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); the "Eight Principle" system of physiology, pathology, pulse and tongue diagnosis and treatment strategy. Students complete practicum courses that cover advanced needle technique, and traditional accessory modalities. In addition, students in the Master of Science Degree program in Oriental Medicine study the herbal theories and traditions of the Shang Han Lun and Wen Bing, and are introduced to new developments combining nutrition and Chinese herbal medicine. Oriental Medicine students acquire the skills necessary to compound and recommend herbal formulas based upon the principles of TCM, and to make food recommendations based upon a nutrition profile.

Coursework includes traditional Chinese medical theory, practical "hands on" classes, bioscience, internship, clinic review and a foreign internship option in China. Additionally, the Oriental Medicine program includes lecture and internship focusing on herbs and nutrition. Classes meet all day on Saturday and one or two evenings per week.

Research

The Midwest College's student clinics, together with its off-campus internship sites, provide the opportunity to rotate through a variety of unique clinical settings and allow interns to experience the styles of many different practitioners. Interns at the Midwest College treat a wide range of medical conditions. Internship includes hands-on experience in; acupuncture, moxibustion, tui-na massage, herbs, other accessory modalities of Oriental healing, and experience with TCM nutritional consultation.

The Midwest College is affiliated with the Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through student and teacher exchange our colleges cooperate in academic development and with research projects. A unique part of the Midwest College's curriculum is the academic or research paper required just prior to graduation. Interns explore an area of their own interest and present a paper worthy of scholarly publication, preparing them for future work at the doctoral level.
