Chiropractic

Chiropractic medicine is one of the three branches of healing along with osteopathic and traditional medicine. As a school of healing, chiropractic may be defined as the diagnosis and treatment of human ailments without the use of drugs, prescriptive medicines or invasive surgery. The consistently steady increase in the public's use of natural health care has escalated the chiropractic profession to the second largest primary health care profession in the United States.

Students at National University of Health Sciences (NUHS), by virtue of their comprehensive education, are positioned at the forefront of the chiropractic profession. National University prepares students to become first-contact, primary care physicians fully qualified to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of conditions. We believe a superior education starts with an evidence-based, broad-scope curriculum emphasizing integrative medicine, which prepares out students to work with other health care practitioners for the ultimate benefit of the patient.

General Information

National University of Health Sciences has been the leader in educating chiropractic physicians since our founding in 1906. Formerly National College of Chiropractic, our name was changed in 2000 to reflect our expanded offerings in alternative and complementary methods of health care. The education of chiropractic physicians, however, continues to be the university's main focus.

The chiropractic philosophy held by National University of Health Sciences sets it apart from other chiropractic programs. We believe the chiropractic doctor must be a genuine physician and undertake the same rigorous learning processes as all other doctors, so we emphasize a comprehensive science-based curriculum. Trained as primary health care providers, our students are able to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of conditions. Our broad approach to chiropractic does not limit us to spinal adjustment but includes the use of physiological therapeutics, acupuncture, soft-tissue massage, trigger point therapy, ultra-sound therapy, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, and other modalities.

Location

National University is located near the great city of Chicago and is easily accessible by major freeways. The 32-acre campus is set in the quiet suburban village of Lombard, Illinois. National University also offers its Doctor of Chiropractic Degree Program on the campus of St. Petersburg College (SPC) in St. Petersburg, Fla., through a partnership agreement with SPC's University Partnership Center.

Facilities

National University's Lombard campus boasts a full range of facilities for education in the basic sciences and chiropractic therapeutics. The main building consists of fully equipped physiology, biochemistry and microbiology laboratories, as well as a gross anatomy laboratory where students learn and perform a full-cadaver dissection. National's on-campus clinic includes treatment rooms, research and X-ray laboratories, and a training and assessment center.

National University students can also take advantage of our fully equipped fitness center, on-campus health services, on-campus student housing, and the Learning Resource Center, and the Learning Resource Center, one of the area's largest medical libraries with 18,000 print and audio-visual items and 242 specialized journals.

Program

National University's program is a five-academic-year, 10-trimester program of study, including one year of uninterrupted internship. If students do not take a break each summer, the program can be completed in three years and four months. New classes are admitted each January, May and September.

Curriculum

National University's distinctive and innovative curriculum integrates knowledge with application by providing students with a thorough grounding in the basic and clinical sciences and extensive hands-on training in diagnosis and treatment. Our students' education concludes with an intensive one-year clinical internship in one of the health care facilities operated by or affiliated with the university. We also have an exclusive practice management program, which gives students the necessary business skills necessary to manage a successful, ethical chiropractic practice.

National's curriculum prepares students for licensure in all 50 states, Canada and several foreign countries and results in consistently top-ranking pass rates on national board examinations.

Admission Requirements

Because we believe a good solid foundation is imperative for students to be successful in our program, our admissions requirements have always been the highest in the profession. All our applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale). Note: Beginning Fall 2012, the minimum GPA required for admission to the Doctor of Chiropractic program will be 2.75.

For those students missing certain science requirements, an accelerated prerequisite program has been developed to address these needs.

Financial Aid

Several types of aid are available to eligible students including scholarships, loan programs and work study programs. The primary source of financial aid obtained by National University students is federal student loans. NUHS participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program whereby students borrow these federal loans through the U.S. Treasury, as well as Federal GradPlus Loan and Federal Perkins Loan. National's Office of Financial Aid works with students to determine the loan or grant program for which they may qualify.
