National University of Health Sciences - Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine

Why National?

For more than 100 years, National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) has delivered unparalleled quality instruction in the alternative health care field. This tradition of academic excellence serves as the model for our professional degree programs. Acupuncture and oriental medicine students also have the unique opportunity to gain clinical experience in our on-campus integrative care center.

Programs

The purpose of the acupuncture and oriental medicine program is to provide the highest quality comprehensive and professional education in the five branches of traditional oriental medicine. Acupuncture and oriental medicine have successfully brought healing and well-being to patients for over 3,000 years. Oriental medicine offers natural, drug-free and surgery-free health care with proven clinical results. It is not a new or mysterious art, but rather a time-tested codified system of medicine — the oldest in the world.

National University offers two advanced degree programs that allow graduates to bring these ancient healing arts to patients in today's modern health care environment: the Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSAc) and the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM). The programs emphasize an integrative and holistic approach to health care, incorporating instruction in clinical western medicine in order that our graduates may practice confidently in a wide range of clinical settings.

MS in Acupuncture

NUHS offers a seven-trimester program leading to the Master of Science in Acupuncture. The degree will allow the graduate to take national board exams and achieve certification in most states to practice as a licensed acupuncturist.

Because of acupuncture's effectiveness, consumer demand for acupuncture is growing. Licensed acupuncturists can now be found in a broad range of health care settings, from hospitals and integrated care clinics, to private practice.

MS in Oriental Medicine

NUHS offers a nine-trimester program leading to the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. National immerses students in the five branches of oriental medicine:

  • Acupuncture
  • Herbal medicine
  • Nutrition and dietary therapy
  • Tui Na – oriental bodywork and therapeutic massage
  • Qigong and Tai Chi

National University's program provides a solid foundation in both western and Chinese medical science, so that the graduate can design integrative treatment plans for their future patients. Students learn fundamental biomedical science and modern medical diagnostics including coursework in radiology, pathology, physiology, microbiology, and public health.

Location

National University is located near the great city of Chicago easily accessible by major freeways. The 32-acre campus is set in the quiet suburban village of Lombard, Illinois.

Accreditation

The Master of Science in Acupuncture and the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine programs of the National University of Health Sciences are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for the approval of programs preparing acupuncture and oriental medicine practitioners. ACAOM is located at the Maryland Trade Center Building, Suite 760, 7501 Greenway Center Drive, Greenbelt, MD 20770, 301-313-0855; fax 310-313-0912, www.acaom.org.
