What Makes Northwestern's Program in Massage Therapy Unique?

Students seeking a rigorous professional massage therapy curriculum will find quality and excellence in Northwestern's School of Massage Therapy. The School of Massage Therapy is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).

There is no doubt at Northwestern that properly trained massage therapists are health care professionals. It is because of this understanding that we have pioneered one of the most comprehensive curriculums available for massage therapy in Minnesota. All of our clinical faculty are nationally certified massage therapists with at least five years of professional practice experience.

Northwestern's School of Massage Therapy:

  • Offers a comprehensive 885-hour program in therapeutic massage therapy. Students may enroll in one of two convenient program options: the day program or the evening/weekend program.
  • The day program takes 3 trimesters (11 months) to complete and the evening program takes 4 trimesters (15 months) to complete.
  • Builds understanding of the human body through 232 hours of courses in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, kinesiology and nutrition.
  • Provides comprehensive training in massage therapy assessment and treatment techniques through a three-trimester, 400-hour sequence of courses.
  • Prepares learners for professional practice through a 97-hour sequence of courses addressing communication, ethics, learning skills, legal issues, and practice management.
  • Puts learning into practice through a practicum experience that includes 180 hours of hands-on care in one of the University's public clinics.
  • For those who qualify, financial assistance is available in the form of Federal Work Study, The Federal Perkins Loan and/or the Federal Stafford Loan Program (subsidized or unsubsidized).
  • Northwestern has a limited enrollment, allowing for a more personal and close-knit atmosphere.
  • There are two 1,100-square-foot massage labs equipped with a minimum of one massage table for every two students.
  • The Career Services office assists students in finding jobs after graduation.

Northwestern School of Massage Therapy Degree

Northwestern's School of Massage Therapy offers a certificate in massage therapy. Students may enroll in one of two convenient program options: the day program or the evening program. The day program requires three academic trimesters to complete. The school admits new massage therapy students for the day program in January and September of each calendar year. The evening program requires four academic trimesters to complete. For the evening program, new students will be admitted at the beginning of one trimester of the academic year: April/May.

Graduates will be fully prepared for most state certification requirements and will have attained the skill sets necessary to be successful in a wide variety of settings: hospitals and medical clinics; rehabilitation facilities; natural care centers; health clubs; fitness centers and sports facilities; health spas and salons; or private practice.
