Graduate Programs in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

Finger Lakes offers two master's degree programs that prepare students for professional practice as licensed acupuncturists: the Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) and the Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSA). For qualified students who meet Finger lakes' 90-credit requirement but lack a bachelor's degree, Finger lakes also offers a Bachelor of Professional Studies option. The MSA program takes 8 trimesters and the MSAOM program takes 9 trimesters to complete.

In providing a comprehensive training in Oriental medicine, students learn about the history and philosophy of Oriental medicine, acupuncture point location, Oriental medicine theory, diagnosis, clinical skills, and treatment of disease patterns. In addition to learning how to become competent in performing acupuncture techniques, students learn other Oriental medicine modalities, such as tuina, qigong, moxibustion, and Chinese dietary therapy. Students in the MSAOM program also learn the extensive knowledge of Chinese Herbology.

As a premier college in the field of chiropractic, Finger lakes takes great pride in its strong western sciences department. Students in the Oriental medicine programs study biomedicine to develop the skills and understanding necessary for patient care as an acupuncturist and for collaborative medical practice within hospitals and health centers. As part of this training, students have experience with cadavers in their anatomy lab work to gain a deeper understanding of western medicine, as well as to enhance their understanding of the acupuncture point locations. At Finger Lakes, students also gain an understanding of scientific research in the field.

Extensive clinical training is essential for enabling students to become competent practitioners. At Finger Lakes, students begin their clinical observation in the first trimester and continue to grow as assistants in the clinic until their clinical experience is culminated in the last year with clinical internship training. A variety of clinical settings are available, including private practice, on-campus integrative health center, student health clinic, and hospital settings.
