Massage Therapist - Certificate Program

Massage therapists use professional touch in the application of massage techniques. Working independently or as part of the health care team, Massage Therapists provide various levels of care and support to their clients that include massage for pleasure and relaxation, as well as therapeutic massage for specific conditions such as carpal tunnel, low back pain, and headaches. Massage Therapists also provide services to special needs populations such as athletes, the elderly and pregnant women. In addition to proficiency in the practical application of massage techniques, Massage Therapists must have detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, as well as strong interpersonal skills and professional ethics.

Key Learning

PMI's curriculum includes Swedish Massage, Therapeutic Massage, Sports Massage, Reflexology, Specialty Massage (geriatric, pregnancy, corporate chair and lymphatic) as well as training in Anatomy, Physiology, Computer Training, Practice Development, Law and Ethics, Wellness Education, Kinesiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, and Asian Theory and Bodywork.

As part of the training, students complete an internship in PMI's new student clinic and day spa where they learn how to manage a massage facility from the front office, the ordering of supplies, inventory control and retail product sales.

The clinic is staffed by student therapists and is open to the public six days a week.

The 720-hour hands-on education is completed in 36 weeks for students taking day classes and 42 weeks for those enrolled in the evening program. Graduates of this program will receive a certificate and are qualified to apply to sit for the National Certification Exam for Massage Therapy.
