The Scherer Vision and Mission

We believe that it is an honor to touch another human being and that touch is essential for human health and well-being. In this spirit, we draw upon our tradition and upon the best new techniques to bring effective, fresh approaches to our students. We provide the highest quality and innovative bodywork education available today. Our graduates, in turn, bring their conscious and expert touch to the world.

Since 1979, we have provided a sanctuary for growth, presence and compassion. Faculty and staff support students with wisdom and encouragement, and are committed to empowering each student to develop his/her own unique, creative healing potential.

Location and Facilities

Santa Fe, the "City of Holy Faith," lies at an elevation of 7000 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the beautiful high desert of Northern New Mexico. Also nicknamed "The City Different", Santa Fe is a city renowned for its natural beauty, art community, diverse culture, progressive attitudes, and our specialty, the Healing Arts. Student Body and Class Size

Students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, lifestyles and national origins attend the Scherer Institute. Some students are fresh out of college with training in fine arts, literature, business, and other specialties. Other students have come from the corporate, medical and scientific worlds. The typical Scherer student is characterized by a passion for growth and a willingness to share his/her skills with the world.

With a maximum class size of 12-20 students, the learning process is enhanced by the personal attention and support each individual receives. Students have ample opportunity to connect one-on-one with teachers and assistants. We believe that individual attention and close group connection is a vital aspect of learning.

Upon completion of the program, students receive a diploma in massage therapy and are well prepared to sit for the National Certification Exam and the MBLEX. Scherer students have achieved a 100% pass-rate on the NCE for the past three years running. Scherer students have a 100% pass-rate on the MBLEx as well. Our goal is that you emerge as a skilled, confident, self-aware professional, able to give your client an unforgettable massage.

Student Practicum and Public Clinic
Our low-cost clinic gives students valuable professional experience in a safe and supervised environment. It is here that we see students blossoming into professional massage therapists. Students also participate in community outreach where they work with a variety of populations, such as hospital patients, the elderly, or people living with cancer and HIV.

Additional Diploma Hours
Students who desire additional credit hours may choose from our extensive list of Electives. Courses may include: Aromatherapy, Flower Essences, Naturopathic Principles, Botanical Medicine, Pregnancy Massage, Spa Techniques, Thai Massage, Zen Shiatsu, Essential Energy Studies, and other Continuing Education classes.

Holistic Medical Massage
Students wishing to receive a 1000-hour diploma may attend the 700-hour massage certification courses plus an additional 300 hours in Medical Massage. This training prepares massage therapists to work more effectively in the complementary medical field, with a specialization in working with pain relief and pain management.

Pre-natal Massage Certification
This 150-hour specialization trains therapists to work with women from pre-conception through post-partum phases of pregnancy.

Full-time and Part-time Schedules

The Scherer Institute offers both Full-time and Part-time formats of our 700 hour training.

  • Full-time programs last 6 months and are held Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm.
  • Part-time Day classes extend 10 months and are offered 9am-1pm, Monday-Thursday.
  • Part-time Evening/Weekend Programs last 11 months. Monday and Wednesday 6-9pm, and every other weekend 9am-6pm both days.
  • Practice Labs and Clinic Practicum, about 105 hours total, are conducted at the school on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and from 9am-5pm on Fridays and are arranged at the students' convenience.

Program Start Dates:

Full-time Program - 6 months

  • March 1, 2010 - Aug 27, 2010
  • August 30, 2010 - Feb 25, 2011

Part-time Evening - 11 months

  • March 8, 2010- Feb 5, 2011

Part-time Daytime - 10 months

  • August 30, 2010- July 1, 2011

Staff and Faculty

Our well-honed team of professional faculty is passionate about teaching and supporting the learning process of each student. Our instructors' diverse interdisciplinary backgrounds and education contribute to the wealth of information available to the student. Academic and bodywork hands-on exams are held to the highest standards by all faculty members. Scherer faculty and staff continuously evaluate and refine the curriculum to meet the growing needs of the profession.
