SCUSOMA understands the high cost of education. We believe that anyone who wishes to pursue a career in health care should not be deterred by cost. We are presently offering scholarships for the Master's in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture.

Doctor's Degree

Through a special arrangement with our sister school Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning province (approximately 560 miles NE of Beijing), SCUSOMA is pleased to offer a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Internal Medicine for Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture.

Liaoning University has 2 private hospitals, 22 teaching hospitals throughout the region, and 2 pharmaceutical factories for student clinicians' use.

Liaoning University has over 10,000 students and admits over 500 foreign students every year. Training is divided into four departments:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Acupuncture and Moxibustion
  • Chinese Pharmacology
  • Osteo-traumatology

The campus also includes a large reference library, a museum of Chinese medical history and a museum of Chinese herbology.

This unique opportunity is offered exclusively as part of your post-master's degree to receive a PhD in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, which is fully recognized as a doctorate degree at the level of a regionally accredited college in the United States.

Educational Objectives

  1. Graduates will be able to pass the license exam required to become primary care providers of Oriental medicine in California.
  2. Graduates will be able to prepare a business plan and make a successful transition from student to healthcare provider.
  3. Graduates will be able to demonstrate the following:
    • Knowledge of theories, principles and therapeutic approaches of Oriental medicine and including, but not limited to, acupuncture, herbology, tui-na, cupping, moxibustion and qi gong, and apply them in a clinical setting
    • Knowledge of the various causes of diseases from both biomedical and Oriental medical perspectives and the ways in which they operate on the body
    • Knowledge of the normal and pathological structures and functions of the body and its major organ systems from both biomedical and Oriental medical perspectives
  4. Graduates will be able to provide the highest quality patient care in oriental medicine with the ability to preform the following:
    • Obtain an accurate medical history, formulate a diagnosis and design an appropriate treatment plan
    • Perform appropriate physical and Oriental medical assessments
    • Develop patient management protocols and maintain accurate medical records
    • Communicate effectively with, and make referral to, other health care providers or emergency care services when necessary

Location and Facilities

SCUSOMA is conveniently located near the civic center of Los Angeles. The school's clinic has been in operation for almost 10 years providing health care for hundreds of patients every month. The SCUSOMA campus occupies the third floor of the building, and it's 10,000 square feet accommodate administrative offices, a clinic, classrooms, a library and a herbal pharmacy. There is ample parking attached to the building with reasonable monthly rates.

Curriculum

The academic program for the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture is a minimum of 120-weeks and 4 academic years. This can be completed, with full-time study, in 36 months. The academic year is based on a quarterly system having 10 weeks per quarter. Students receive 10 hours per credit/unit for didactic training and 20 hours per credit/unit for clinical training. Students will complete a total of 3,380 hours (240-quarter units/2,400 clock hours for classroom instruction courses and 98-quarter units/980 clock hours for internships. Elective course are optional and are not required for graduation.
