Philosophy & Objectives

The School of Holistic Massage and Reflexology (SOHMAR) is dedicated to teaching holistic massage and reflexology by utilizing natural techniques that allow the body to heal itself. The school offers affordable training in the growing field of massage therapy, reflexology, and the alternative health care field.

Location

SOHMAR is conveniently located 25 minutes from downtown Chicago, in Downers Grove.

How Are We Different?

The School combines a variety of techniques, which embrace physical, mental and spiritual healing. Our goal is to incorporate these techniques in a friendly, non-threatening environment. Class size remains small so we can work individually with each student.

Unlike other programs, there are no pre-requisites to complete beforehand. Hands-on instruction begins on day one! Classes are broken down into theoretical and practical segments. Student/Client clinics are held monthly, in an effort to provide "real world" experience as well as hands-on practice at outside events. Registration is on-going, so when you are ready, so are we!

Because our classes meet one or two evenings a week, many of our students maintain their jobs while earning their certificates. Our flexible schedule is the reason working adults and those wanting to make a career change choose SOHMAR. Certification takes 52 weeks for Massage, 10 weeks for Reflexology, and 13 weeks for Sports Massage.

Internships Available

To help students build more confidence; we have developed internship partnerships with working professionals in the field. If the student chooses, they can participate in this program before graduation.

Massage Certification Class

This course is 550 hours of intensive training in anatomy and physiology, massage techniques, and bodywork. We meet and exceed Illinois Licensure requirements while preparing you for state testing. Upon completion of this course you will receive a Certificate in Massage Therapy.

Instruction Hours Per Class: 4
Homework/Outside practice: 10 to 15 hours per wk.
Student/Client Clinic: Monthly and some weekends
Evenings - Monday & Wednesday OR Wednesday & Thursday
Time: 6: pm - 10:00 pm

Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Number of Class Sessions: Approx. 52 weeks
Optional Internship Program: Last 12 weeks

Reflexology Certification Class

(Also available as 40 CE Hours)

This is a 125-hour certification course in reflexology. In this class you will learn anatomy and physiology of the foot and leg, theory and hands-on practice of holistic reflexology techniques. Upon completion of this course you will receive a Certificate in Reflexology or 40 CE Hours.

Total Hours: 125 Certification Hours or as 40 CE Hours
Instruction Hours Per Class: 4
Homework/Outside practice: 5 hours per week
Class Meets on: Tuesday Evening or Friday Morning
Times: Tues Eve. 6:00 - 10:00 or Friday Morning 10:00 - 2:00
Number of Class Sessions: 10

Sports Massage Certification Class

(Also available as 50 CE Hours)

This 13-week course of intensive training is dedicated to working with the athlete, before, during and after training and competition. We will discuss theory and history, preventive, curative and emergency treatments. The classes are divided between theory and practical experience.

Prerequisite: Certified in Massage Therapy or concurrently enrolled
Total Hours: 52 Certification Hours or as 50 CE Hours
Instruction Hours Per Class: 4
Class Meets on: Tuesday Evening
Times: 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Number of Class Sessions: 13
