Advanced Personal TrainingSwedish Institute was founded in 1916, and although many people know about our Massage Therapy Program, our roots included exercise and fitness. The school was originally called the Swedish Institute of Physiotherapy and taught a system of wellness that included medical gymnastics and massage. The Advanced Personal Training Program curriculum is infused with the spirit of those early classes, because the history of the field is as important as the most up to date research. The coursework provides students with a strong academic and technical understanding for the profession of fitness training. It includes the study of basic and advanced topics in exercise science, addresses client-centered practice skills, and culminates in a final externship experience. The Advanced Personal Training Program is a 61 semester-credit-hour program that can be completed full time over a period of 16 months. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify. Successful graduates of the program receive an Associate in Occupational Studies degree. The curriculum meets the standards of the knowledge, skills and abilities set forth for certification by professional organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Graduates are prepared to work in a wide variety of settings, such as gyms, fitness centers, health clubs, corporate fitness programs, rehabilitation centers and physical therapy offices. Massage TherapyFounded in 1916, Swedish Institute has the oldest Massage Therapy Program in the country. Its dynamic curriculum develops strong skills in both Western and Eastern styles of massage, a solid knowledge base in the biosciences, and an emphasis on integration of these components into practical applications in classes and clinics. Business and ethics courses are also an important part of professional development. The program can be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis, with classes available during morning, afternoon, or evening/weekend hours. CompletionThe Massage Therapy Program takes full-time students four semesters to complete, and takes part-time students eight semesters to complete. Within the period of July 1, 2009 to June 30 2010, 78.2% of full-time graduates completed the program on time within four semesters, and 83.8% of part-time graduates completed the program on time within eight semesters. These statistics are reported to our accrediting body, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). SuccessThe Massage Therapy Program is a 64.0 semester-credit-hour program. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates receive an Associate in Occupational Studies degree. They are also eligible to sit for the New York State licensing exam in massage therapy. Our graduates pass the exam with a high rate of success; 91 percent of first-time Swedish Institute takers passed the exam given in January 2011, compared to an 81 percent pass rate for all first-time takers from other schools. The 2010 job placement rate for students who completed the program is 87 percent (combined full-time and part-time cohorts).
