Advanced Personal Training Certificate Course

Bring client care to a whole new level! Enroll in Swedish Institute's Advanced Personal Training Certificate course offered through Swedish Institute's Department of Continuing Education.

Taught by recognized experts in the field of exercise science, course participants learn to work with clients at all levels of the health-fitness spectrum to create comprehensive and sophisticated programs of health and wellness utilizing exercise testing.

Students learn to promote healthier lifestyles by helping clients modify negative lifestyle behaviors. Students integrate pre-habilitation and post-rehabilitation exercises into a periodized approach to exercise program design suitable for clients ranging from the chronically ill to the elite athlete and everyone in between.

The two-semester Advanced Personal Training Certificate course is ideally suited for licensed health care professionals who wish to expand their practice by providing exercise instruction to clients but is open to members of the general public who have an interest in personal training.

The APT course consists of 160 hours of specific hands on and lecture instruction in exercise technique, testing, physiology, and programming. Those who do not meet the anatomy and physiology prerequisites may take the course pre/co-requisites. Graduates of the course receive a Swedish Institute Advanced Personal Training Certificate and are prepared to take national certification exams given by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Please note, Swedish Institute's APT course is much more than a certification prep course!

Course schedule

The Personal Training course enrolls students three times a year: January, April/May and September. Come join us at our monthly Open House!

Classes meet twice a week for four hours during two 10-week terms, totaling 20 weeks of classes. Those who need to satisfy prerequisites will be required to attend additional classes. Contact us for more details.

What do graduates say?

"The course content covered all the possible areas of personal training. As a physical therapist I was very impressed with the syllabus. As a matter of fact, I use aspects of program design I learned in the program to make exercise prescriptions for my present patients."

Franky Burrowes, PT. , CSCS.

My time in the Exercise Science/Personal Training Course at the Swedish Institute has been by far the most rewarding and satisfying educational experience I have ever had. Many of my trainers have completed this program and I continue to recommend it to anyone pursuing a career in the field.

In my practice, this knowledge is applied daily when administering intake health assessments, fitness evaluations, creating safe and effective program designs, preventing injuries, as well as communicating with doctors and other health care professionals. This knowledge is allowing me to do meaningful and important work: I am helping middle aged women maintain and build bone, guiding an obese population in safe and effective exercise, increasing quality of life for an elderly woman by giving her balance and resistance training to prevent frailty and falls, and helping a recreational golfer be the best he can be. I graduated from the program with broad based knowledge, and an invaluable library of class reference materials that I find myself referring to on a continual basis.
