Do Your Dream At SWIHA"When asked why graduates choose to take classes at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, we often heard, 'because it felt like the right thing to do' or 'I liked the energy here.' What students may not realize is that they are already accessing very powerful healing modalities - - that of 'energy medicine', often known as intuition. For this reason, we encourage students to go with classes and instructors to which they are intuitively drawn. Southwest Institute of Healing Arts offers over 250 classes per quarter! We feel that students should have the opportunity to pick and choose from many high quality, cost effective classes as they 'Do their own dream!' Whether you're looking for a new career, looking to expand the skills you already have with exciting, new and up-to-date continuing education classes, or are interested in personal growth and healing, we invite you to visit our campus and see how it feels to you. We truly believe you'll feel very much at home." History
Southwest Institute of Healing Arts was founded in September 1992 as Southwest Institute of Myotherapy by Brian and KC Miller for the express purpose of providing high quality, cost effective continuing education for massage therapists and multi-disciplinary Bodyworkers. Within six months the school offered 200 hour and 500 hour programs designed to meet licensing requirement needed for massage therapists. SWIHA was licensed by the Arizona Post Secondary Board of Education in May of 1993. In 1995, the name of the organization was changed to Southwest Institute of Healing Arts to better reflect the variety of Holistic Health Care careers offered. As before, students were encouraged to customize their own course of study based on their deepest interests, selecting from a wide variety of classes and programs that address body, mind, and spirit. SWIHA has graduated hundreds of massage therapist and has had over 2000 people attend continuing education classes, as we offer more than 250 classes per quarter. The SWIHA motto is "Do Your Dream and Do it Your Way." We understand that two people would probably never have exactly the same dream. The same is true of students at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts. Rarely do any two students graduate with exactly the same transcript because students are encouraged to "Do Their Dream" and "Do it Their Way." Students can choose from hundreds of electives beyond the core classes. The belief behind this flexible curriculum is that we all have talents or gifts and will be encouraged to develop what are intuitively drawn to. Some students find they are drawn to the classical Swedish massage, an art form of relaxation, nurturing, other students find their niche in the deep therapeutic, and rehabilitative work Myotherapy provides. Others discover their gift in energy work - Reiki, Healing Touch or Polarity. Still others discover their affinity to the Oriental Healing Arts. Any combination of these options is applicable to your massage certificate. Student Centered LearningAt SWIHA, we celebrate the differences in our learners. As there are different dreams, there are different dreamers. SWIHA has come to recognize that individuals have different learning styles - visual, kinesthetic and auditory. Different learning modalities assist students in mastering the materials. For example, the fundamentals of anatomy are brought to life with use of music, guided imagery, rhythm, dramatization, games and song. Utilizing the latest research in whole brain learning, we combine anatomical information with non-linear modalities of learning. We offer more actual classroom and hands-on training than any school in the valley. Expert InstructorsAll instructors at SWIHA are practicing therapists or Holistic Health Care Practitioners. The commitment to our students is that they will always have an instructor that is an expert in the subject in which they teach. Consequently, we have over 100 subcontracting teachers that may only teach a few hours a quarter, but they teach their particular subject with a passion. The goal is to expose students to the most knowledgeable instructors in the valley or the world for that matter (we regularly host international teachers). In addition, we have a variety of currently working experts in the field providing role models for students and a wider network of contacts. At SWIHA our instructors are reminded to "teach only love, for that is all there really is" and to question "Of what good is it for a student to master the analytical material of (for example) Anatomy if their soul is battered along the way?" Learn to touch lives, heal bodies, and free souls.
