The Toronto School of Homeopathic Medicine offers exceptional distance learning and on-campus programs in classical homeopathy. Homeopathic medicine has been practised worldwide for over 200 years and plays a significant role in the healthcare systems of many countries today. This effective and scientific system of medicine assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognizes that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person, and that it is the patient that needs treatment, not just the disease. Homeopathy is an exact science based upon clearly defined principles and natural laws of healing. The practice of homeopathic medicine is an art which applies this holistic science and philosophy to the individual.
The Toronto School of Homeopathic Medicine was founded in 1994 in response to the recognized need for quality homeopathic education. We are accredited by the Council on Homeopathic Education and have the distinction of being the only Canadian school offering a professional graduate program in homeopathy to gain such status. Our professional training program is based on classical homeopathic principles discovered and developed by Samuel Hahnemann as described in his 'Organon of the Medical Art'. We emphasize clinical proficiency within a creative and supportive environment. Creativity is encouraged in our students, and central to the experience of learning is the joy of discovery. The routine of work is thus transformed into willing service and inspires self-discovery. It promotes mental and emotional flexibility and a growing awareness of homeopathic philosophy. As we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, we also develop a less prejudicial view of others and a greater appreciation of humankind. We offer intensive three and four-year programs in classical homeopathy. The nine-month academic year runs from September to May with classes held two weekends per month at Victoria College in the University of Toronto. We also offer classes beginning in January each year. In order to ensure an exceptional standard of training, we have adopted the core curriculum guidelines of the International Council for Classical Homeopathy (ICCH). ICCH curriculum guidelines have been implemented by most of the major homeopathic colleges worldwide. This is an intensive, specialized program in homeopathic medicine with continuous assessment involving much structured home study, assignments and research projects to complete, as well as periodic testing on material covered in lectures. Our priority is to make available to the student whatever knowledge, insight or experience is necessary to become a competent homeopathic practitioner in successful professional practice. Our gifted teaching team have a wealth of homeopathic experience to draw from. The core lecturers are all professional homeopathic practitioners with a minimum of ten years practice experience and each has the ability to bring the fascinating study of homeopathy to life employing modern teaching methods. The principles and philosophy of homeopathy are studied in great detail, as their understanding is essential for successful professional practice. In depth materia medica studies are a very important part of the program. Homeopathic practice methodology involves the study of case-taking, case analysis and case management techniques along with the study of the homeopathic medical repertory, which is an index of symptoms derived from the materia medica to enhance the ability of the practitioner to find the correct remedy for the patient quickly. Repertorization techniques are cultivated throughout the course. Practice management is taught to help ease the transition from student to new practitioner and to learn business and other skills for building a successful practice. Topics include: location of premises, advertising and PR, fees and accounts, staff, insurance, stress management for homeopaths, etc. Other integral components of the program include Homeopathic Therapeutics, or the homeopathic approach to the treatment of specific disease conditions, Anatomy & Physiology, Pathophysiology, Physical Examination, Nutrition, Listening Skills and Counselling Skills. During clinical training each student will gain the experience and ability to prescribe successfully for acute as well as chronic diseases. Clinical training is the most challenging and rewarding aspect of the student's homeopathic education and is supervised by some of the most respected and experienced practitioners in Canada. The course is designed to produce well-trained and highly-skilled homeopathic practitioners who are then able to participate effectively and equally in the integrated systems of health care delivery that are the contemporary norm in all nations of the world.
