Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Degree Program
The academic program at this University is designed to offer a Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The program consists of 2130 hours of lecture and 960 hours of clinical courses, for a total of 3090 hours (174 units).

This University operates year-round on a trimester system with the majority of students enrolled full-time. The courses are designed to present TCM theory, acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Western clinical science in conjunction with each other so that to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Oriental medicine.

Students may enroll at this University on a part-time basis if financial burdens or other responsibilities prevent full-time study. Part-time students must be available to attend classes on the schedule, but will have a lighter course load. Part-time students must choose their courses in accordance with the sequence of the University's curriculum and the course prerequisite guidelines. Objective: To expose students to Chinese medicine, its origin, concepts, applications and philosophy as well as western medical sciences and technology, leading to the award of the Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

• To provide affordable day-to-day health care to the community at the clinic where the students are receiving their clinical training.
• To conduct research that benefits the acupuncture profession and addresses the interrelationships between Eastern and Western medicine.
• To provide students with the proficiency necessary to qualify for the California Acupuncture Licensing Examination and the Certification Examination of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturist and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
• To enable our graduates to enter the next century with confidence and a sense of purpose so that they, as trained Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, will play a vital role in improving the life span of all people.

Location and Facilities

The University campus is located near downtown Sunnyvale, California, at the corner of El Camino Real and Mary Street, in the center of robust Silicon Valley. Nearby are the world-famous Stanford University and San Jose State University. You can reach the University conveniently by highways 101, 85, 237 or 280. The campus is also easily accessible by public transportation (Buses 300, 22, 53 and 54). Situated in an affluent community, the campus is conveniently located near shops and restaurants along El Camino Real. Sunnyvale's public library is two blocks away from the campus.

The University's buildings are in the style of Chinese classical architecture, with pavilion gate and garden. To provide a comfortable study environment for students, the University has lecture classrooms, a teaching clinic, library, herbal pharmacy, bookstore, administrative offices and lounges for faculty and students. The library has medical and related publications in both Chinese and English, with a total of more than 1500 volumes. The library also contains videotapes, slides, and other study aids available for students and faculty to use.

Faculty

The quality of education at any university depends upon the working knowledge, experience and teaching ability of its faculty. Our faculty is carefully selected from the many experienced traditional Chinese medical teachers in the communities of the San Francisco Bay area. Most of our TCM core-program faculty have been trained at highly respected medical colleges in the People's Republic of China. All our faculty speak English fluently and each is an experienced and competent teacher as well as practitioner. Every faculty member is dedicated to the transference of genuine traditional Chinese medicine to the West.

Accreditation and Authorization

The University of East-West Medicine has received formal approval from the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) to grant the degree of Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The curriculum is designed to meet the didactic and clinical requirements of the California Acupuncture Board and to qualify graduates of this University to sit for the California State Acupuncture Licensing Exam. The University has full Approval from the California Acupuncture Board.

The Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the University of East-West Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for the approval of programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners. Eligible students in the accredited Master's program may participate in federal student financial aid programs.
