Walter Jay M.D. InstituteWalter Jay M.D. Institute, an Educational Center, was founded by Dr. Walter Jayasinghe and Prasanna Silva. Two goals were targeted when the Institute opened in 1994:
We believe that education makes a world of difference. All students can learn. Education is a collaboration of student, school, and community. We seek to improve the quality of life in the local community through practical training and life enriching instruction. The Walter Jay M.D. Institute believes in the uniqueness, dignity and worth of all persons. The person is a human being with physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Human beings have a primary need to meet physical survival as described by Maslow. Understanding the developmental and recognizable stages from conception through death, based on Erickson/Newman is the foundation for the life cycle. Educating members of society to fit the role of care giver and members of a health-care team to render safe effective care of patients in achieving optimal health is a primary outcome of this program. All students will be taught to interact with the external environment that includes the patient, patient's family, and the community incorporating cultural factors affecting patient care. Our students have helped reach this goal by walking out of the Educational Center as the finest employees of the Los Angeles Community. Our facilities are designed to maintain small class sizes for some of the programs. Our occupancy level will accommodate 80 - 100 students at any one time. Our campus accommodates students in wheelchairs. The facility has all necessary equipment for lecture and laboratory practice. Examples of classroom equipment include: audio/video equipment, medical charts, massage charts, etc. Laboratory equipment include: computers, full service medical clinic, medical processing lab, massage room, etc. Walter Jay M.D. Institute also offers English as a Second Language courses for students who do not meet the English proficiency requirements for the listed programs. This school is approved to issue I-20 for M-1 visas.
Massage TherapyTo secure employment as a Massage Therapist. Student will learn in-depth and practical applications of bodywork through multiple modules. This course includes Externship. The program includes comprehensive instruction in the history of massage therapy along with the professional ethics, laws and regulations governing the practice of massage. Students will build a strong foundation on anatomy and physiology of the human body. Lecture, demonstration as well as extensive hands on training is included to introduce the students to various styles and forms of massage. These include but are not limited to Swedish massage, reflexology, deep tissue massage and spa treatments. This will enable the student to understand the physiologic mechanisms of complementary bodywork systems and identify overlap in the technical skills among the various systems and integrate concepts of the style into the therapeutic massage. During the supervised practical section, the student will have both give and receive massage in order to master the techniques taught. Successful graduates will be guided to receive their license so that they can work as independent contractors or get hired in spas which may be independent or within hotels and cruise liners, chiropractic clinics, holistic medicine clinics or hospitals and entrepreneurial students may build their client base to start their own business!
