Study Acupuncture in California
at Yo San University
Celebrated Healers Maoshing and Daoshing Ni have created a unique and intimate academic environment offering comprehensive Taoist-based training in the many facets of traditional Chinese Medicine.
The Yo San University Master's Degree Program, founded in 1989, has long been singled out for its academic excellence and for its masterful and comprehensive incorporation of the most traditional elements of Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, herbology, nutrition, tui na, qi gong, tai chi, etc.) into a contemporary, career-driven program.
The YSU Master's Degree Program prepares students to excel in their pursuit of the professional training, credentials and licensing required to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine in the United States. Representing the 38th generation of healers in their family, Maoshing and Daoshing Ni remain committed to providing academic excellence in this non-profit institution named after their grandfather, the legendary Yo San Ni.
Yo San University
Where Medicine has Meaning
"Attending Yo San University was the greatest growth
experience of my life. Yo San was perfect for me because of the
small, family-like community that fosters support and
individualized attention. I attended many courses at other TCM
schools and Yo San by far had the strongest academics. Everyone
has a path, with the right place and right time. Yo San
University is here for those who are looking for a close-knit
community and exceptional academics."

What does it mean to be a healer and what does it take to become one?
Yo San University is dedicated to teaching Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) according to the principles of Taoist Classical Medicine. A key aspect of Taoism -- living in balance and harmony with nature -- promotes the highest levels of physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health. We encourage our students to focus on their personal growth, so that they can effectively facilitate the healing of others. At Yo San University we do not train you to become just a skilled technician. At Yo San University, you will become a healer.
Extensive Qi Program
Many students choose to study at Yo San because of our unique Qi Development curriculum, which is based on the century's old Ni family traditions such as "Eight Treasures" and "Harmony/Trinity Style Taiji." Our emphasis on Qi development as the foundation for becoming a healer sets us apart from most schools of Oriental Medicine.
Professional Development
Yo San University requires to
students to participate in a unique Professional Development
program that will give you the tools to become a successful
practicing acupuncturist. The program's focus is on community
service - you will have opportunities to educate the public and
the Yo San community about TCM. Yo San's staff and faculty will
work with you to develop the presentation skills and confidence
that will enable you to take the practice of TCM far and wide.
Academic Excellence
The education at Yo San is field
based, problem oriented and guided by the Taoist philosophy of
balance and harmony. Classes are small, fostering an intimate,
personal learning experience. Our faculty is committed to
academic excellence, sets high education standards and is
determined to provide you with an education that is at once
intellectually stimulating and relevant in today's modern health
care environment.

Serving Our Community
Yo San Community Clinic & Herbal Laboratory
Our thriving on-site TCM Clinic gives our student interns the unique opportunity to treat the general public under the supervision of experienced Licensed Acupuncturists. Treatment may include acupuncture, recommendations for herbal therapies, cupping, tui na massage, and more.
Caring for Communities Outreach Program
Many of our student interns, alumni, and licensed staff are off-site as many as three days a week, treating individuals who would otherwise not have access to our vital services. Yo San students have the opportunity to complete a substantial portion of their studies and/or Clinical Internship at:
- Being Alive - Where young men living with AIDS/HIV experience the benefits of acupuncture.
- Venice Family Clinic - Where members of low-income families at the largest free medical clinic in the United States can experience no-cost Traditional Chinese Medicine.
- Chronic Pain Clinic - (Opened in 2006, and operated by the Venice Family Clinic) Where members of the Venice, West Los Angeles and Culver City communities experience the unique benefits of acupuncture and herbal medicine.
- Learning Garden - A cooperative effort of Venice High School, Yo San University and other community groups, where Yo San students tend a Chinese herbal garden during a portion of their lab hours, and learn herbology 'in the field.' The Learning Garden is also home to the outdoor Yo San Tai Chi Patio where students practice Tai Chi and Qi Gong forms learned at Yo San.
