What is osteopathic medicine?
Osteopathic medicine began as a holistic system of health care based on the ideas of Andrew Taylor Still, MD. This system emphasizes prevention of illness and the maintenance of good health. Therapeutic techniques, such as manipulation, address the relationship of the body's structure and function. Patients may also be counseled on exercise and diet. Osteopathic doctors (DOs) can also prescribe drugs or practice surgery.
How is osteopathic medicine practiced?
Osteopathic doctors may practice in any standard medical setting but most choose to enter private practice. The typical osteopathic doctor has family practice, often in a rural setting.
What osteopathic medicine degrees or certificates are available?
Training is very similar to allopathic physicians. The most visible difference between the two professions is the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Training in the standard osteopathic program lasts four academic years. Some residency programs can last up to seven years. DOs are licensed for the full practice of medicine and surgery in all 50 states.
