Her education was experiential and supplemented by any resource available. After providing community birth for 14 years, she entered the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and, upon graduating with honors, she completed a community-based family medicine residency, returned to her home town, and opened a family medicine clinic which also provided community birth services. In 2013, she relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she opened a home birth practice and, in 2017, opened Winding River Birth Center.
