What is holistic skin care?| | The body has an amazing capacity to heal and rejuvenate itself and taking care of all aspects of the connected whole—whether it be diet habits, exercise habits or hygiene habits—contributes to a person's overall health. As the largest organ, the skin readily benefits from the same nutrients that nourish the body. Use of a multi-vitamin regimen for treating the skin can promote tissue growth, repair damage and provide added protection against environmental toxins. The major emphasis today is on products formulated |
A holistic skin care program not only creates youthful radiant skin, but also has more extensive benefits of physical well-being. The anti-inflammatory benefits of a holistic program decrease body aches and pains, and create a more balanced emotional state. Holistic skin care is effective in treating certain common skin conditions, including the following:
- Actinic, or chemically affected skin from radiation exposure
- Sun damaged skin
- Tired skin
- Stressed out skin
How is holistic skin care practiced?
A thorough cleansing remains the all-important first step of any skin care regimen. Make-up, dirt and environmental pollutants can clog pores and lessen the effectiveness of topical nutrients and exfolients, so it is critical to thoroughly remove make-up and impurities but also keep skin in a soft and supple state. Hydration and light massage associated with a daily cleansing stimulates blood circulation, which in turn improves both the texture and color of the skin.
A cleansing may be followed by any of the following: facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, lasers, safe injectables, topical products, supplements, changes in diet and reduction of stress.
Becoming an esthetician or holistic skin care specialist
People interested in becoming an esthetician need to get either a basic license or a master license. Facial treatments, body wraps, waxing, reflexology, aromatherapy and skin analysis are a few of the areas of study for esthetics and holistic skin care students. It is also a good idea to become a member of both the International Estheticians Association and the National Cosmetology Association for up-to-date industry information as well as student and professional events and trainings.
