The College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University:

What makes the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Unique?

At the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CAOM), we see health care as both an art and a science. This view is reflected in the scope and diversity of our curriculum and in the expertise of our skilled and knowledgeable faculty members. Our master degree programs emphasize the unified understanding of the mind, body and spirit inherent in Oriental medicine. CAOM is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).

Master Degree Programs in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

CAOM offers two programs of study - a master degree in Oriental medicine and a master degree in acupuncture. The Oriental medicine program consists of more than 3,000 hours of instruction, which takes approximately three years to complete. The acupuncture program consists of more than 2,300 hours, which takes two and 2/3 years to complete.

CAOM also offers an Herbal Medicine Certificate Program for licensed acupuncturists.

CAOM delivers a quality education by combining the following benefits:

  • Northwestern offers master degree programs in Oriental medicine and acupuncture.
  • Northwestern's multi-national faculty, many of whom were trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine programs in China, is committed to academic and professional excellence.
  • In addition to two on-campus student internship clinics, CAOM student interns provide acupuncture and Oriental medicine services in a variety of clinic settings. Northwestern and CAOM have developed an extensive network of collaborative partnerships for interns, including:
  • three hospital systems (Allina's Abbott Northwestern Hospital, HealthEast's Woodwinds Hospital and the University of Minnesota Medical Center – Fairview);
  • the Aliveness Project, a non-profit organization providing service to people living with HIV/AIDS;
  • Salvation Army Harbor Lights clinic and Pillsbury House, both clinics dedicated to treating underserved populations;
  • Courage Center, which provides service to stroke and spinal cord injury patients; and
  • Volunteers of America Edina Care Center, a clinic dedicated to treating the elderly.
  • For those who qualify, federal financial aid is available in the form of Federal Work Study, the Federal Perkins Loan, and/or the Federal Stafford Loan Program (subsidized or unsubsidized).
  • Our graduates have the education and skills necessary to develop a successful practice based on their own style.
  • Northwestern has a limited enrollment, allowing for a more personal and close-knit atmosphere.
  • Northwestern boasts state-of-the-art facilities for educational and recreational use.
  • The Career Services office assists students in finding jobs after graduation.

CAOM is part of Northwestern Health Sciences University, an international leader in natural health care education, patient care and scientific research. Our 25-acre main campus is located in Bloomington, Minnesota, just minutes away from some the state's largest attractions.
